:: What’s
happening in the East? |
|
|
Markets around the world bump along seemingly
going nowhere, but in Eastern Europe opportunities abound
in property and in stock markets. When VW took control of
Skoda in 2001, people remembered the Skoda jokes. What do
you call a Skoda with sunroof? A skip. VW are skipping all
the way to the Bank now. The Skoda production plant outside
Prague is larger than Monaco. The results are now clear to
see. Skoda has clawed back nearly half the car market in the
Czech Republic and exports 80 percent of its production to
neighboring European countries. The company has even won various
awards for its newest models, which car experts say speaks
volumes for the improvements. Companies supplying Skoda have
benefited and so have investors in them.
Throughout Eastern Europe properties are
racing ahead in value, some doubling in a year. Yet you can
still buy a property in many countries for a few thousand
euros. With 25 countries already in the EC, and more applying,
is it a surprise that demand for property in the East is rising,
while the West finds prices slipping?
